Rachel Agatha Keen (born 24 October 1997), known professionally as Raye (stylised as RAYE), is an English singer and songwriter. Before rising to prominence as a solo artist, Raye was known for her involvement with songwriting and producing for other artists including Beyoncé, Little Mix, Rihanna, David Guetta, John Legend, and Ellie Goulding. In 2019, she was given an BMI (Broadcast Music Group) Film & TV Award for her “groundbreaking artistry, creative vision and impact on the future of music.”
Raye rose to prominence after her guest appearances on the commercially successful singles “By Your Side” by Jonas Blue and “You Don’t Know Me” by Jax Jones, as well as her co-performances on “Secrets” (with Regard) and “Bed” (with David Guetta and Joel Corry). In 2021, she departed from Polydor Records in favor of an independent career, where she soon gained domestic media attention within the following two years. This foresaw the release of her 2022 single “Escapism” (featuring 070 Shake), which first earned virality on TikTok the following year and soon became her first song to peak the UK Singles Chart. Furthermore, it reached the top ten in over 22 countries, and became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. She has amassed over 18 chart entries on the UK Singles Chart, including five top ten hits to date.
“Escapism” preceded the release of her debut studio album My 21st Century Blues (2023), which received commercial success and widespread critical acclaim; earning a nomination for “Best Independent Album” at the AIM Independent Music Awards as well as “Album of the Year” for the 2023 Mercury Prize. Also in 2023, she received a Brits Billion Award—becoming one of the first acts to win the award—as well as a Ivor Novello Award and Global Award. Furthermore, she’s been nominated for four Brit Awards, a BET Award, three Popjustice £20 Music Prize, three Ivor Novello Awards, four Global Awards, and three AIM Independent Music Awards.
