In spring 1987, Santana and Buddy Miles performed at the “Palace of the Republic” with their “Freedom” concert in East Berlin, where they were celebrated euphorically. The fans queued up 48 hours in advance to get one of the few freely available tickets. Carlos Santana later said about this concert: “If you play in front of 55,000 hippies, it’s nothing special, you belong to it. But in front of an audience with short hair, different thinking patterns and who haven’t smoked hash yet, that’s more challenging. So this was my best concert at that time. ”
